2nd Semester Program Begins at Schultze and Wright Elementary

Councilwoman Jennifer Ramos kicked off the second semester of the SA Kids Get Fit “Walk to Wellness Challenge” at Wright Elementary in the Harlandale School District. She gave a brief talk to the 4th grade students who will be participating in the program, explaining the program’s goals and extolling the virtues of healthy eating and regular physical activity. Students were also advised on proper pedometer use. Each student received a water bottle and logbook to aid them in achieving a healthy, active lifestyle.

District 3 Chief of Staff Gabe Farias led a similar kickoff event at Schultze Elementary in the Harlandale School District on January 29th. Mr. Farias spoke to the 4th graders there about the need for healthy eating and physical activity.

Councilwoman Ramos has acquired the help of Ike Pribyl, a senior student in the Exercise Science program at Texas A&M San Antonio to facilitate the program. Pribyl will be monitoring the students’ activity and assisting their coaches with program implementation.

Pribyl and the staff at the A&M San Antonio Kinesiology department are enthusiastic about the SA Kids Get Fit program and the opportunity to work with District 3 on this initiative.

Program Aimed at Curbing Childhood Obesity and Childhood Diabetes in District 3

On Friday October 2 District 3 Councilwoman Jennifer V. Ramos along with officials from the Harlandale School District officially launched the SA Kids Get Fit “Walk to Wellness Challenge” at Schulze Elementary.

The “Walk to Wellness Challenge” is a 10 week exercise pilot program implemented in two different schools in the Harlandale School District aimed at the problematic issue of childhood obesity and childhood diabetes.  Both the Wright Elementary and Schulze Elementary 4th grade classes will initially participate in the program.

The program participants were given pedometers, logbooks, jump ropes, water bottles and other items that will assist in the program implementation.

Currently, data shows that several areas in Bexar County have high diabetes mortality rates.  There are several communities in District 3, especially in the Harlandale School District that are amongst the highest in the County.
